So after failing dismally at making lactation cookies – they came out ROCK hard – I decided to take a more humble route and make a lactation smoothie, using the same ingredients. As a working mom, my supply does need a boost from time to time, because I’m not always able to take my pumping breaks, a lactation smoothie is a quick way to get all your breastfeeding super foods into your system.
2 x small bananas
Strawberries or blueberries (optional)
1.5 cup rolled oats
1.5 cup full cream / almond milk / water
1 tablespoon flaxseed powder
1 tablespoon brewer’s yeast
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon chia seeds (optional)
A dash of cinnamon
Simply add all your ingredients into your blender until it’s at your preferred texture.
I put it in a whiskey glass just for dramatics – just because you can’t have alcohol, it doesn’t mean that you can’t participate in make-believe. It came out very creamy and tasty. The whole idea is to use a variety of ingredients that will help you produce milk without compromising too much on taste, I used bananas because they are my favourite fruit. The brewer’s yeast has a strong taste so be careful not to add to much as I did during my second attempt.
Of course you can play around with the fruits you like, the most important ingredients here are the oats, flaxseed, brewer’s yeast and chia seeds.
Please try it and let me know how it goes, or share your recipe with me.
