My first goal for 2017 – To Play More

Happy New Year Mama’s!

This is the time that we set sights on our new goals for the year. Over the festive period, I took some time to reflect on the things I would like to achieve this year. As much as I have big plans for my career, finances and health (it’s seriously time to lose the baby pooch haha), I spent quite a lot of time thinking about how present I am as a mother after being inspired by this video, posted on the Fisher Price Facebook Page.

Granted, last year was a year of transition and a lot of the time I felt scattered, having welcomed my second baby and returned to work after maternity leave, buuuut, if there is anything that I have learnt about spending 3 weeks without a nanny is that – our household can be fun even when things are a mess. I only washed dishes once a day and did laundry when we ran out of things to wear 🙂

Some things I would love try this year:

Not plan for every second of our weekend: gosh, I’m so tired of rushing on a Saturday morning – from one party/activity/extra lesson. I’ve struggled with saying “NO” for so many years and I end up feeling exhausted at the end of every weekend.

To practice mindfulness and really focus on each moment: I bring my work worries into our house faaaaar too often!

To make multitasking fun: since we cant play all the time because things need to be done, I’ll have Lesedi read to me while we cook dinner, even if it’s just reading from recipe to me. We didn’t have much time for spontaneous reading in 2016.

To show my children my fun side: e.g. introduce Friday night “sleepovers” in our living room. Friday afternoons are when I am most relaxed and worry-free.

To teach skills in more playful ways: e.g. Play dress up and put on performances for our family (the Gogo’s) – this might also help Lesedi to be less shy in front of a crowd (a skill which I am also yet to master)

Our 2017 is going to be made of more moments like this:

This year, I really want to try a more relaxed approach to parenting. It’s tough, especially when you’re a working mom, because you just want to come home after a long day and get things done – but I’m pretty sure it will be more fun to sit on the carpet with them for 20 minutes and just relax, before I rush into dinner, homework and bath time.

Let’s make 2017 the year that we stress less and play more!

I would love to hear what you’ll be up to this year, please leave me your comments!

  1. I think I need to do more of this too. I want to stress less this year and enjoy being with my son instead of stressing of all the things I need to do.
